What does an Elementary Guidance
Counselor do?
The most important
role of the Elementary Counselor is to be
Help students focus on academic, personal/social and
career development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead
fulfilling lives as responsible members of society.

National Standards).
WHAT DOES AN ELEMENTARY COUNSELOR
DO?
- Works with individuals, groups of students
and parents.
- Provides parent education in both individual and
lecture settings.
- Provides crisis intervention for children
faced with stressful events such as divorce, abuse, death, family breakdown,
suicidal thoughts, peer problems, etc.
- Provides guidance lessons on topics such as problem
solving, self-esteem, coping strategies, social skills training, teamwork,
anger management, conflict resolution and character
education.
- Provides small group counseling on topics such as
anger management, and social skills.
- Assists parents in making use of community
resources.
- Consults with school staff and pupil appraisal to assist
students.
- Assists teachers in providing the best possible
learning environment for the student.
- Serves as a member on 504, School Building
Level Committee, and Crisis committee.
